The Need to Move Forward Now

It is recognized that the Missouri Bootheel has many opportunities to improve its economic well-being and must do so promptly to avoid being left behind by other regions.

The SMEDA Membership recommends these initial actions:

  • To work in partnership with federal, state, and regional organizations to develop a new marketing plan for the six-county area which includes a re-branding of the area’s image and a broader focus to regionalize the economic development approach.
  • To employ a qualified executive director, to be based at the University of Missouri Delta Center. The University will extend in-kind services including office space, equipment, and administrative support.
  • To raise a minimum cash budget of $100,000 a year for three years, 2006-2008, from the private sector to fund the SMEDA regional marketing efforts and staff.
  • To bring city, county, state, federal, and private sector representatives together for semi-annual conferences, to identify common goals and strategies to help each community and county within the region attract and sustain jobs, and at the same time encourage businesses in the six-county area to purchase more goods and services from suppliers in this region.
  • To allow the SMEDA Executive Director to represent the region to media and others regarding economic development issues.
  • To establish panels and committees to assist in the effective marketing of the region.
